Echoes of Summer

This photo project is my effort to recreate and capture the essence of the summer vacations of my youth. It visually explores the joy, wonder, and simplicity of childhood summers on Cape Cod in the 1980s and 90s. I am undertaking this project with my son, aiming to share with him the same sense of adventure and connection to nature that defined those years for me.

During those summers, we didn’t have phones, video games, or air conditioning. Our days were spent outside—running through sprinklers, swimming, or playing mini golf. Many of the locations and backgrounds of these images remain largely unchanged over the past 40 years, offering a sense of continuity between past and present.

I’ve chosen to use a small Fuji digital camera for this project, which produces images with a subtle nostalgic quality. Part of my inspiration comes from a recent viewing of Joel Meyerowitz’s book “Cape Light”. Although the landscape of the Outer Cape is perpetually changing with the wind and tides, there is a strong continuity over time. Many of the images in the book, while taken in the 70s, could easily be from my era or even today.
